THE BASIC SHAPE IS A VARIATION ON THE TRIANGULAR SHAPE OF THE SHUTTLE MISSIONS PATCH.

The FIVE YELLOW stars representing each space disaster or mishap related to manned space exploration.

The FOUR RED stars at TOP represent the constellation Ursa Major the Bear which stands for the four Russian/Soviet Cosmonauts lost in manned space exploration or research: Vladimir Mikhaylovich Komarov of Soyuz-1 and Georgiy Timofeyevich Dobrovolsky, Viktor Ivanovich Patsaev & Vladislav Nikolayevich Volkov of Soyuz-11.

The THREE GREEN stars at TOP RIGHT represent the constellation Sagitta or Arrow which stands for the three Apollo astronauts lost in Apollo 1: Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee.

The ORANGE stars at BOTTOM LEFT represent the constellation Aquila which NASA selected to represent the Challenger; Aquila the Eagle represents the crew of the space shuttle Challenger lost on STS-51L: Ronald E. McNair, Michael J. Smith, Francis S. Scobee, Ellison S. Onizuka, Sharon Christa McAuliffe, Jarvis Gregory and Judith A. Resnik.

The BLUE stars at BOTTOM RIGHT represent the constellation Columbia, The Dove. The STS-107 Columbia crew chose this constellation to represent themselves and the Columbia on their mission: Rick D. Husband, William C. McCool, Michael P. Anderson, David M. Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark and Ilan Ramon (the first Israeli astronaut).
